An Instagram Series

Self regulation is the ability to control behavioural and emotional responses. It's having the skill to calm yourself when you get upset, to adjust to change, and to handle frustration without outbursts.

Blowing bubbles is a kid-friendly way to teach deep breathing techniques.

To blow bubbles, you need to breathe from the belly at a regular tempo - which is a great way to calm yourself in high anxiety situations!

Part of teaching self-regulation to young ones, is teaching them how to label their feelings. Books are a really helpful way to do this!

Reading books about emotions is a great way to discuss all of the feelings a child might have, and it can be done in a fun and enjoyable way!

Using calm music to create a calm atmosphere can help settle kids down.

You can also make up silly songs to help children remember self-regulation strategies.

Sometimes the best way to self regulate ourselves is to have a healthy snack.

Lack of sleep, dehydration or a hungry tummy can take a toll on anyone's social-emotional skills!
